Similarities

Razer Seiren Mini on a boom arm.

HyperX SoloCast on a boom arm.

The Razer Seiren Mini and HyperX SoloCast are each company’s budget microphone options. I bought the Seiren Mini for its launch price of $50 and the SoloCast for its launch price of $60 (Amazon).

Although they lack some of the physical additions of more premium offerings, their sound quality rivals much more expensive mics. Here’s what these two mics have in common:

  • USB, plug and play.

  • Single condenser capsule.

  • Adjustable desk stand (Seiren Mini gets up to 6.5” and SoloCast almost 7”).

  • Plastic body.

  • No knobs for gain adjustment and no headphone jack.

Differences

5/8th inch threading on the Seiren Mini.

3/8th and 5/8th inch threading on the SoloCast.

  • The SoloCast has 3/8th and 5/8th inch threading for boom arms, but the Seiren Mini only has 5/8 inch threading.

  • The SoloCast has a capacitive mute button on the top that makes the LED blink.

  • The SoloCast’s stand makes it taller and it has better range of motion. It can be rotated 90 degrees as well.

  • The Seiren Mini’s cable is micro USB B to USB type-A. The SoloCast’s wire is Type-C to Type-A.

  • The SoloCast comes in black, but the Seiren Mini comes in Quartz Pink, Classic Black, and Mercury White.

Seiren Mini USB Cable. 71 inches long.

SoloCast USB Cable. 81.5 inches long.

Performance

Here is some sample audio recorded from both microphones.

Here is a quick breakdown of how each mic performs in relation to each other:

  • Both mics are very susceptile to distorting from plosives.

  • The SoloCast has a slightly warmer sound (more bass) when used about 3 inches away.

  • The Seiren Mini has harsher sibiliance when used close up (closer than 4 inches).

  • The Seiren Mini has better resistance against shocks from bumping a desk such as typing on a keyboard.

Verdict

The HyperX SoloCast is the better microphone with less harsh sibilance and slightly fuller bass, and it has a mute button on the top.

The problem is, you can sometimes find the Samson Q2U (my article) - one of the absolute best budget mics on the market - for the same price that the SoloCast launched at. Prices fluctuate on all these devices of course, so I’ve linked all of them below.

So to make things simple: of these two mics, the SoloCast is better. However, if you’re going to spend the extra money for the SoloCast, you might as well get the Samson Q2U as it’s a dynamic mic with good off axis sound rejection and has a USB and XLR connection option.
