Image Quality

For the following images, I’m recording with studio lights and daylight. The lights I am using are the Elgato Key Light, Elgato Ring Light, and Neewer 18” Advanced Ring Light. Links are to my reviews.

Maximum resolution comparison

Logitech Streamcam at 1080p 60 FPS, MJPEG.

Logitech C922 at 1080p 30 FPS.

When the Streamcam is set to 1080p 60 FPS and the C922 is set to 1080p 30 FPS, the Streamcam is slightly sharper than the C922 and it has a wider range of colors available. The wall in the above images has a more accurate shading of white, blue, and green from the color of the light being reflected in from the window. My shirt and skin tone look slightly more natural as well.

The C922 looks a bit undersaturated, but it’s not that drastic. The real difference at 1080p is in live footage, where you can see how much smoother the 60 FPS of the Streamcam is compared to the 30 FPS of the C922.

Streamcam YUY2 demonstration

Logitech Streamcam at 1080p 30 FPS YUY2.

The Streamcam’s colors make a giant transformation when used at YUY2 or NV12. This is accessible in OBS in the webcam settings window by decreasing the webcam’s frame rate down to 30 FPS and then changing the video format. YUY2 and partial color range has given me the best effect.

At YUY2, reds are more natural, brown actually exists, and the white balance is much improved. The downside to YUY2 is that the webcam must be used at 1080p 30 FPS, reducing the smoothness drastically. As of this writing, the Razer Kiyo Pro (my comparison) is the only device that can do YUY2 at 1080p 60 FPS.

C922 720p 60 FPS demonstration

Logitech C922 at 720p 60 FPS.

Logitech Streamcam 1080p 30 (top), and Logitech C922 720p 60 FPS.

While the C922’s ability to do 60 FPS at 720p is what sets it apart from the Logitech C920, it’s just not very impressive these days. On launch, sure, but not anymore. The image is incredibly pixelated and it’s impossible to make out text that isn’t massive. This feature isn’t worth using in my opinion.

Microphone Audio Quality

The audio from both the Streamcam and C922 is lackluster. The Streamcam’s sounds better since the noise cancelation is much stronger. The computer fan overpowered my voice in the C922. Still, a lot of the fine details in my voice were lost and the overall sound is both muffled and tinny on both.

A good microphone to pair with either the C922 or Streamcam is the Samson Q2U (my review). It’s a dynamic mic with good background noise rejection and very clean sound.

Verdict

Logitech Streamcam (left) and Logitech C922.

The Logitech Streamcam is definitively better than the Logitech C922 in terms of image quality and microphone audio. It’s a bit sharper, has less grain, and has better colors. It’s also smoother at 1080p since it can do 1080p 60 FPS, while the C922 can only do 1080p 30 FPS or 720p 60 FPS.

Still, I don’t think the Streamcam vs the C922 is the “correct” comparison to make. Both the C922 and Streamcam are really both intermediary steps between the Logitech C920 and the Logitech Brio. The C920 can usually be found much cheaper than the C922 and has identical image and audio performance. It’s just missing 720/60 functionality.

The Brio launched around the same price as the Streamcam but it can do 4K and it rivals the Streamcam in colors when set to YUY2. Ultimately, I recommend either saving the money and getting a C920 or going for the best webcam Logitech has to offer which is the Logitech Brio. My reviews of both those devices are linked.
